If you are an atheist, rationalist, freethinker, social activist, human rights activist, support of freedom of expression, ardent science lover and your blood boils to raise your voice against religious fundamentalism, casteist oppression, superstition and religious extremism in your country, and then this is the right cause for you to support
I am Manjula Devi, wife of Aneesh Jasy (Aneesh M), who was arrested and charged for expressing his views about his former religion. My husband is an Ex-Muslim who chose to become an atheist after realizing the falsehood of Islam and all other religions. My husband, just like most of you, couldn’t keep his eyes closed in this largest democracy, where religion is force-fed into every walk of life!
As per the Indian constitution, "Article 51 A (h)" of our constitution which deals with fundamental duties makes it a duty of every citizen to develop Scientific Temper; (as per clause [h]). he voiced his opinion against the forced indoctrination of religions, especially against Islam, quoting from its scriptures, in all manner of civic without using slurs or foul language, that too with memes in his Facebook page, in the Tamil language.
His Facebook posts are still open for the public to view; you can check for yourself, there is no nudity, no slurs, no foul language, but there are some thought-provoking memes in ordinary people’s language to make the viewer think and reason his faith!
This must have been a death blow to some religious fundamentalists, infuriated they suspected to have prompted the Tamil Nadu state police to book him under various sections of IPC section 295 (A), 153 A (1) (C), 505 (2) which states that he promoted enmity between two religious classes. Which anyone who can read Tamil would find it, it was not so.
On 29th Dec 2021, he was taken to the police station on the false pretext to enquire about his colleague and an FIR was filed and he was arrested without a warrant and taken into custody!
After a lot of struggle and dismissal of bail plea a couple of times, he was finally released on conditional bail on 13th Jan 2022. Since he is released under conditional bail, he has to visit the police station regularly, which has disrupted our day-to-day life.
The arrest has made him lose his job.
Following the arrest, our house address has become public, which is very dangerous to his life as we live in the same area where another ex-Muslim was murdered for leaving the religion in 2017.
He already has received multiple of death threats on social media and he has received similar threats indirect calls too from religious fundamentalists.
As now our house address and family whereabouts are revealed, we are an easy target for religious extremists. Also, we have been asked to vacate our rented house as the landlord too fears the wrath of the religious fundamentalists!!
Having no place to stay, no employment, no means to pay our legal process, we are running from pillar to post to seek monetary help and moral support!!
Me and my husband both do not have much support from our parents or relatives, as they are still deeply religious. We have a 3 year old daughter, her future and safety worry us the most!!
Tamil Nadu is the state where the modern-day Socrates Periyar was born; he criticized his religion and superstitious beliefs and is the soul of millions of Tamilians. Yet when my husband Mr.Aneesh followed his footsteps, but he is persecuted!!
If you sincerely feel Aneesh has the right to criticize his born religion under freedom of expression and is wrongly condemned, kindly support us by paying what you can afford!!
